A growing number of religious couples are challenging the traditional marriage - the very nature of kiddushin, the legal acquisition of a bride, the property rights and inheritance laws, and one-sided monogamy - and seeking halakhic solutions to making their marriage more egalitarian, not only in practice but in halakhic implementation. Prenuptial agreements address some of these issues, but not all. The following materials discuss these challenges and attempts to find solutions.

Beckerman, Cheryl
"Kiddushin and Kesharin: Toward an Egalitarian Wedding Ceremony," Beckerman, Cheryl. Kerem, 1997, 84-100.

Synopsis: Beckerman discusses the challenge of finding a halakhic solution to a wedding ceremony while challenging the very one-sided and nature of kiddushin as the acquisition of a bride and its relationship to property law. In this article, it becomes clear that the problems of a halakhically-committed and feminist bride are not just the desire to involve women more in the ceremony, but the halakhic implications of the act of marriage.
